Muntons gain the new ISO50001 energy management standard – a first for malting
Muntons the malt and malted ingredients manufacturer has become the first maltster in the world to gain the ISO50001 standard for Energy Management.
This standard, introduced to the UK in July 2011, tests that energy management procedures are highly robust and that the facility operates according to best practice. It ensures that energy savings are targeted and achieved and that staff are well versed in the importance of energy measurement and saving.
This is a major achievement to be amongst the first few companies in the UK to achieve ISO50001. It is a worldwide first amongst malting companies and follows previous environmental successes. Muntons has already been recognised as the most sustainable manufacturer in 2011 by ‘The Manufacturer’ and were placed in the top rankings in the prestigious Sunday Times Best Green Company for the last four years,
In addition to the two fundamental benefits that an energy management system brings – saving money by using less energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions – there is another benefit. By adopting best practice as normal, you prove that your commitment is real and serious. Measurable results that are externally verified speak volumes when dealing with legislators, customers and employees.
Muntons has successfully met stringent targets for energy saving set by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and saved over 12% of gas and electrical energy used over the past 12 years. This has been achieved by involving staff at all levels, appointing a group energy manager and installing an energy monitoring and targeting system to capture significant energy use on our sites.
